Passport Application

If you cannot produce an eligible guarantor for an application of a new passport, the lawyer at Vaughan Notary Public can commission a statutory declaration in lieu of a guarantor.

Who can serve as a guarantor for applicants in Canada according to the Canadian Government?

  1. A Guarantor must hold a five years or ten year Canadian passport that is valid or has been expired for less than a year on the day the application is submitted.
  2. A Guarantor must be familiar with the applicant in a personal manner for two years or more. If the application is for a child, the guarantor must have been personally acquainted with the applicant (the parents or the legal guardian) for two years or more and must have knowledge of the child.
  3. A Guarantor must be a Canadian citizen of 18 years of age or older;
  4. The Guarantor must have been 16 years of age or older when applied for his/her Canadian passport;

Additional information:

  1. The Guarantor is required to provide his or her passport information on the application;
  2. Passport Canada will contact the Guarantor for verification purposes;
  3. The Guarantor must reside in Canada or the United States. Additional residency areas are authorized for the purpose of this type of application – see Passport Canada website for the list.

A Declaration in Lieu of Guarantor:

Applicants that cannot produce an eligible guarantor may resort to the use of a statutory declaration in lieu of a guarantor. The correct form for that purpose (Form PPTC 132) is available at any Passport Canada office location or by contacting Passport Canada.

The applicant is required to swear or declare and sign before the attending lawyer at Vaughan Notary Public that the information provided in his or her application is true. The attending lawyer at Vaughan Notary Public will administer the oath or solemn declaration.

Notarization of Passport Photographs:

The attending lawyer at Vaughan Notary Public will certify the applicant’s photographs.

Notarization of Supporting Documents:

The attending lawyer at Vaughan Notary Public will certify any supporting documents the applicant is required to include in his or her application, such as documents supporting the identity of the applicant.
